Baggins

maybe if you read what I wrote you will have noticed that I agreed that is what we SHOULD be doing?

Not sure where you get 250m from for tv money though mate, chelsea only got 150m all in from the PL central funds for winning the league last season.

Re: Henry Onyekuru?
Sorry, I haven't been following, why couldn't Onyekuru play for us next season if we had signed him?

Re: Henry Onyekuru?
Trevor - I think you're looking at this the wrong way. We should have a budget for youngsters and a budget for first team players.

Last couple of seasons for example we have spent money on Fernandes and Quina. Have those signings affected our first team budget? No, of course they haven't. That is money we are in affect gambling with, long term projects that may eventually pay off but may not.

We are not short of money. We will pull in nearly 250 million in TV money alone from this season and next season. 250 million. So setting aside from that 15 million each summer to go and sign a youngster or two shouldn't be a huge issue. It's not what the club SHOULD be doing either it's what we NEED to be doing to compete with the likes of Everton, Southampton, etc.

I don't really care about us not getting this kid, btw. I'm talking generally.

Correct.

Re: Henry Onyekuru?
So lets get this 100% straight?

Even if we had signed Onyekuru he would of not been allowed to play for us next Season??

Is that correct?

Re: Henry Onyekuru?
Baggins

Lets say we have a transfer budget of Ł50m, would you be happy with spending nearly a 5th of that on a player who won't be able to play for us for at least a season, possibly more? I get that you think that's what we SHOULD be doing, but the reality is often different. Everton, for example, are about to bag upwards of 80m for Lukaku, so they are doing their shopping early and therefore this transfer doesn't eat too much into their transfer budget for the season. FWIW I would have loved us to buy him and loaned him out, but I also understand the need to spend any available funds for this season. Let's face it, we are TWO transfers windows behind our peers.

Re: Henry Onyekuru?
Thames - We can sign young prospects AND sign established players at the same time. We got 120 million in TV money alone last season and will get that again this season.

Yes, we need some first team players. But looking around europe and trying to pick up some elite youngsters from the smaller leagues is exactly what we should be doing. We can afford to do both.

Re: Henry Onyekuru?
We cannot and will not make a bid for a young player of his age due to our need to opt for proven players to improve our league position.
The funds will be geared towards known achievers in the prem hence the Giroud and Walcott rumours.

My concern is that players who have done well for other prem clubs. especially Arsenal based on our history with their hand me downs, most haven't faired well here. Ljungberg, Wright, Lansbury, or more importantly haven't achieved a better accolade, my only exception is Hartson.

Trevor B,
I didn't remember that Trevor but I think you are doing what you accuse others of doing with media reports. Here's the actual story which does not say we bid for him.

Hammers coy on Onyekuru reports
Posted by Hugh5outhon1895 on June 11, 2017
West Ham are refusing to confirm that Henry Onyekuru may be on his way to the club this week.

The Daily Mail claims that talks have progressed to the point where the young Nigerian could fly to London this week and take a medical with the Irons.

Arsenal have been chasing the youngster but the report claims the Irons have persuaded him to find his platform at the London Stadium where he is likely to have a much greater chance of regular football than in north London.

The player himself has explained that this is a big factor in his thinking but at this stage it is best to HOPE the Hammers have made that amount of progress as there was a distinct reluctance to confirm it by our senior insiders.

He would only say: He’s just one of many players we are possibly looking at.”

However, there definitely seems to be an enthusiasm for not allowing too much to escape into the public domain this summer.

I wouldn't trust Hugh at the moment, if anyone really did anyway, the board aren't giving out information so that is speculation at best. Two weeks ago he was saying we had bid 7m.

Re: Henry Onyekuru?
Not according to C&H..

'Despite what some may say he was never a top target for the Hammers and was often described to us as just one of many strikers that Irons held some interest in.
To our knowledge, there was no formal bid from West Ham just some initial enquiries. In truth, West Ham weren’t snubbed or outbid they decided to pass on a player they didn’t think could obtain a work permit and were dubious whether he could make the jump up to the Premier League'

PD

We, along with seven other PL clubs, all had bids accepted and offered terms before the WP application was turned down.

Syd - It was actually Brady who said recently that we did try to buy Lukaku some time ago.

As for this guy, it doesn't appear as if we were really in for him anyway.

Re: Henry Onyekuru?
Yes i remember we did try and sign Lukako, well according to the press we were having a sniff? Mind you going by the press we are looking to sign just about everyone who is remotely available from unknown Africans to the delusional like James "Hamez" RodrĂguez

Re: Henry Onyekuru?
Did we even want this player, loads of speculation.

As for Everton having the foresight to sign Lukako, didn't we attempt to sign him?

If he was that good then a big club would have snapped him up.

I didn't suggest he didn't want him, but rather the deal might not have suited him. He pulled out of the Bacca deal after obviously wanting him enough to approach him. Loads of reasons why a deal might not happen.

Let's judge things at the end of the window.

Disappointing to miss out on this lad as he looks like a talent (in my opinion which is worth jack shit when it comes to judging players in the Belgium first tier).
